Two girls said to be sexually assaulted in Athlone

Gardaí are investigating an alleged serious sexual assault on two girls yesterday in Athlone.

The incident is said to have happened at around 4pm yesterday in the Athlone area.

Three men, one aged 30 and the other two in their mid-40s, are in custody in Athlone Garda station as part of the investigation.

They were arrested for public order offences in the area yesterday and brought to Athlone Garda station.

The three were remanded on public order charges after being brought to a special sitting of Athlone District Court at 10am this morning.

However following their appearance in court, the three were arrested as part of the investigation into the alleged sexual assault and brought back to Athlone Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
