Bail applicant 'lost passport' before arrest

A Co Kildare man has told a High Court bail hearing that he lost his passport a couple of weeks before he was arrested in connection with a bombing conspiracy in the UK.

25-year-old Jason Buckley, who has an address at Harbour View Apartments, Athy, is in custody on foot of a European Arrest Warrant.

Buckley is wanted in England over an allegation he was involved in a conspiracy to cause explosions in Staffordshire.

He is trying to get bail, but one of the conditions is that he has to surrender his passport, which he claims he has lost.

He told the court that he usually keeps his passport on him because in every pub he goes to he gets asked for ID.

The 25-year-old said he last saw it about 2 weeks before his arrest earlier this month.

Mr Justice David Keane called it an "unusual problem" and said while he was anxious to be fair to Mr Buckley his inclination was not to waive the surrender of his passport as a bail condition.

The judge has given him a week to provide more detail to the court on how he mislaid the document.
