Ryanair pilot fired following documentary

Ryanair has sacked a pilot who appeared on a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary on Monday night, which raised concerns over fuel policies and safety at the airline.

The company has also said it will take legal action against John Goss, one of the airline's longest-serving pilots, who was due to retire at the end of this year.

Earlier this week Ryanair promised to sue Channel 4 for what it called an unbalanced and defamatory broadcast.

In a statement last night, the company said it would not allow an employee to defame its safety record, when three weeks earlier he confirmed in writing that he had no concerns.

John Mulligan, business journalist with the Irish Independent, said Ryanair is moving to protect its brand.

"I suppose maybe Ryanair's modus operandi is not to take this kind of thing from anybody, he explained.

"Obviously they're always very prepared to take legal action … to protect their brand. And as a company, that's their prerogative."
