Pensioners group accuses Government of 'scare tactics'
Active Retirement Ireland say they have received a number of calls from worried pensioners regarding the prospect of cuts to their weekly payment.
The community-based older people's organisation was responding to reports this weekend that the old age pension will be cut by €10 per week in October's Budget.
The group have accused the Government of using "scare tactics" against elderly people by leaking the information.
Peter Kavanagh, Information Officer with Active Retirement Ireland, said that such cuts do not seem to be off the table,

"The only thing that's been confirmed is that it hasn't been discussed at Cabinet level," he said.
"To be honest with you, that sort of ambiguity would even leave us fearful and the other organisations that represent older people would be fearful that it's still a possibility.
"It is something that puts people into a very, very difficult situation when they don't know what kind of cutbacks they're going to have to make in their own lives because they are looking at a fixed income."
