Man drowns off Donegal coast

A 24-year-old man has drowned in the sea off Ardara, Co Donegal today.

He is the ninth person to drown during the recent heatwave.

The man was swimming when he got into difficulties at about 2pm.

Gardaí said the man was airlifted to Letterkenny hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Irish Water Safety has made repeated appeals for awareness of the dangers of swimming in areas without lifeguards, especially in open water, and the difficulty of swimming in cold water following a series of deaths in rivers, lakes and at sea.

A 32-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being rescued from the River Nore in Kilkenny City.

UPDATE: Gardaí say her condition is not serious.
