Reilly: 'Grave concerns over Savita report'

The Minister for Health James Reilly says he has grave concerns following his reading of the HSE report into the death of Savita Halappannavar.

The findings of the review by a panel of seven experts will be published this afternoon.

Thirty-one-year-old Savita died from septicaemia at University Hospital in Galway last October, following a miscarriage.

Reilly says he has written to her husband Praveen, offering to meet with him and he says this report, along with a HIQA review, will help to provide answers.

"It's fairly straightforward, straight-hitting, spares nobody and says it like it is…I can say, having read the report, I have grave concerns."

Meanwhile, Reilly says there are no term limits in the new abortion legislation because you cannot limit a right.

He also says the new legislation does not give anyone the right to terminate the life of a new born child.

"This is a right enshrined in the constitution and you can't limit a right by time.

"It's very, very clear where a woman has a right to a service where no other action than a termination can avert the risk to her life as opposed to her health, that there is no right conferred on her or anybody else to terminate the life of a new-born child."
