McGrath: Independent TDs 'will fight' Seanad abolition

A group of Independent TDs are vowing to fight the Government plans to abolish the Seanad.

Shane Ross, Finian McGrath, Maureen O'Sullivan and Mattie McGrath say reform should happen rather than abolition.

Deputy Finian McGrath said the Taoiseach Enda Kenny will face major opposition on his plans to scrap the upper house.

"We are members of the Dáil but we strongly support a reformed Seanad," he said.

"We will fight them in the Dáil, we will fight them in the Seanad, we will fight them in every street and every constituency in Ireland".

"The abolitionists are putting across a lot of misinformation in relation to this debate. This debate is about democracy - in an economic crisis you need more democracy, not less democracy."
