A 17-year-old youth who died in hospital after being pulled from the River Blackwater in Cork has been named locally.

A 17-year-old youth who died in hospital after being pulled from the River Blackwater in Cork has been named locally.

He is one of two victims of two separate drowning incidents in Co Cork yesterday.

The teenager, named locally as Christopher O’Sullivan from Co Kerry, was swimming with three friends when the alarm was raised yesterday afternoon.

He had been swimming at a local bathing area known as Lisheen Bridge in Knocknagree when he got into difficulties.

He was airlifted to Kerry General Hospital where he died in the early hours of the morning.

Separately, a 21-year-old man has drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Lee late last night.

The man was with a group when he went into the water near Dripsey, Co Cork.

Gardaí were alerted after he got into trouble after midnight in the Inniscarra area.

The man’s body was recovered from the water and later brought to Cork University Hospital.
