A man in his 20's has died following a swimming accident in Cork last night.

Two units of the fire brigade responded to a call about a swimmer getting into difficulty at Iniscarra at around 12.30am.

The incident comes as a 17-year-old Cork youth fights for his life after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Blackwater in Knocknagree in Cork.

Cork Fire brigade recovered the body of the man in his 20s from the river Lee near Iniscarra graveyard at around 12.30am.

It is believed his body may have been in the water for around an hour.

Two men were subsequently arrested after a fracas broke out involving a number of men at the scene.

Gardaí are also investigating a separate disturbance which broke out at Cork University Hospital, believed to be connected to the man's death.

The incident comes as a 17-year-old remains in a critical condition in hospital this morning after a separate swimming accident in Co Cork yesterday evening.

He got into difficulty while swimming in the River Blackwater near Knocknagree shortly before 6pm yesterday.

He was rushed to Kerry General Hospital, where his injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
