Government announces referendum to abolish Seanad

The Government has published the 32nd Amendment to the Constitution - which will be the subject of a Referendum this Autumn.

If ratified, the amendment will see the Seanad cease to exist from midnight on the day before the Dáil first meets after the next General Election.
