Majority think garda presence on roads has reduced in last year - survey

Almost 72% of Irish people believe the garda presence on the roads has reduced since last year, according to a new survey published today.

A poll of 20,000 motorists by the AA shows that many people believe there are less gardaí on the roads and a further 40% don't think road safety is a priority.

The AA is calling on the government to make sure adequate resources are provided to gardaí to ensure the road safety strategy is not allowed to drift down the priority list.

Media spokesman for the group, Arwen Foley, said: "Almost 72% believe the presence of gardaí reduced in the last year, quite a high percentage and it's quite telling.

"It's something people are worried about."
