A town mayor accidentally drove his car through a supermarket front door just five days after being elected.

Terry Buckle, 73, celebrated in style by mistakenly powering through the entrance of his local Tesco Express store while attempting to park in a disabled bay.

His vehicle's movement prompted the automatic doors of the shop to open and he crashed into shelves full of fizzy drinks, which landed on his car.

He is quoted by the Daily Mirror newspaper as saying: "I put the brakes on and all of a sudden the car shot forward for no apparent reason. I don’t think my foot was on the accelerator.

“It might have been a fault with the car. Thankfully the doors just opened up for me as I lurched forward so I didn’t smash them or anything.

“I knocked down a display but that was it. It was just a freak accident. I was shaken more than anything else."
