Two women have been killed and four people have been injured in a crash involving a car and a minibus in Co Carlow this afternoon, gardaí said.

Two women have been killed and four people have been injured in a crash involving a car and a minibus in Co Carlow this afternoon, gardaí said.

The collision occurred around 3.30pm at Rathwade Cross, Bagenalstown.

"Two female occupants of the car, one believed to be in her 50s and the other believed to be in her 70s, were pronounced dead at the scene," a garda statement said.

Two children who were also in the car, as well as the male driver and female passenger of the bus, have been removed to St. Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny.

The road in the area is closed to facilitate an examination at the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.
