FG's Buttimer refuses to be drawn on unrest over abortion row

There is growing unease within the Fine Gael party in the row over abortion legislation.

Galway TD Brian Walsh has already confirmed he will not vote for the Bill.

Jerry Buttimer, Chair of the Oireachtas Health Committee and Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, refused to be drawn this morning on how many deputies my vote against the Bill.

Mr Buttimer said: "I wouldn't have a clue, and I wouldn't like to guess, with respect, because this is too important an issue to be ratcheting up in terms of who is meant to do what.

"This is about a government bringing forward a piece of legislation to be debated in committee and to be debated in the houses of the Oireachtas."

Last night, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny appealed for calm and asked people to wait until the legislation is published before making judgement.
