Childcare sector wants extension of free pre-school scheme

The organisation representing professionals working in the childcare sector is calling on the government to extend its free pre-school scheme.

Early Childhood Ireland is making the call at its annual meeting in Ballsbridge, Dublin today.

Currently children aged between three and four are entitled to one year of free pre-school.

But CEO of Early Childhood Ireland Irene Gunning, says if this was extended to two years, it would improve the educational attainment of children.

"The bottom line is that children have better childhoods, enjoy it and learn better, don't need maybe as much remedial support through school and stay in school longer."

"That would thereby enhance all their chances in life."
