UNICEF report to reveal link between hunger and climate change

A quarter of the world's children under five are undernourished, according to UNICEF.

The organisation will today launch a report on nutrition, and hunger and its relationship to climate change as part of a major conference in Dublin Castle.

Representatives from Africa, Asia and Central America will outline their struggle to produce nutritious food in regions which are most affected by climate change.

The event will be attended by the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore, former President Mary Robinson and climate change activist Al Gore.

The UNICEF report will also highlight the progress made globally in providing the right nutrition to children in their first early months.

Peter Power, UNICEF's Ireland director, said: "Unless children, from the moment of conception in the womb and right throughout until they are aged about two, unless they get the proper food and nutrition through those critical 1,000 days, they will be stunted for the rest of their lives.

"That is a terrible shame and is something that UNICEF is determined to combat."
