Retired farmer dies in fire on Cork-Limerick border

A 77-year-old retired farmer has died in a fire on the Cork - Limerick border.

The blaze broke out at the farmhouse where he lived alone at Castlequarter, sometime before 11pm last night.

The emergency services responded and fire units from Kilmallock and Mitchelstown attended the scene where the man was pronounced dead by a GP at 11.50pm.

The man's body was removed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for a post-mortem.

Garda technical experts are now examining the scene to establish what caused the blaze.
