Rabbitte denies Coalition row over water charge introduction

The Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte has denied there was a communications breakdown within Government on the introduction of water charges.

Mr Rabbitte has joined the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and Junior Finance Minister Brian Hayes in saying that the charge will not be brought in on January 1, 2014.

This is despite Environment Minister Phil Hogan insisting homes will have to pay for water from that date.

Minister Rabbitte says there is no row within the Coalition over the issue.

He said: "No, there is too much emphasis entirely on that.

"All Phil Hogan did was to advise of the prescription given to Bord Gais at the time and the timeline that they were to follow.

"It always rested with Government in terms of the commencement date."
