Garda sergeants face disciplinary action after conference walk-out

Four Garda sergeants facing disciplinary action after they walked out of their annual conference in a protest action are attending a meeting with management at the Garda College in Co Tipperary.

The group from Carlow and Kilkenny staged walkouts at the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors annual conference in Sligo this week during addresses from Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan and Justice Minister Alan Shatter.

Representatives of the AGSI are also in Templemore for the meeting with an Assistant Commissioner.

Martin Callinan said the action was inappropriate.

"It's really important that people reflect on how they behave," he said. "We are An Garda Siochána. I recognise the hurt and pain that people are going through. Also, they are entitled to protest, but it's the manner in which they protest that's the issue."
