There will be no let-up in the freezing and snowy conditions over the Easter break.
Met Éireann has upgraded its weather warning in the east of the country with up to 5cm of snow expected to fall before tomorrow.
The wintry conditions are due to last well into next week. The Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has extended the winter fuel allowance by one week as a result.
Met Éireann forecaster Ger Fleming said the snow showers would ease over the next few days but temperatures would remain low.
"It looks like the weather is going to stay closed right through Easter and right into next week," he said.
He said the snowfalls would peter out, but the cold weather would remain.
