Seven-year-old boy critically ill after falling into Cork river

A seven-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after he fell into a flooded river in Co Cork.

He was taken to Cork University Hospital after the incident yesterday evening, but has since been transferred to Dublin.

It is understood the seven-year-old was playing football with friends in the Tir Cluain estate in Midleton, when he slipped and fell into the Owenacurra River around 6.45pm yesterday evening.

The river was in flood and the boy was quickly swept downstream, as his friends raised the alarm.

It is believed a local man managed to pull the boy from the river, and emergency services tried to resuscitate him.

He has been taken to the Crumlin Children's Hospital in Dublin, where he remains in a critical condition.
