Unstable chemical made safe at Cork school

An Army Bomb Disposal Team has today made safe a quantity of an unstable chemical at a school in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork.

Dinitrophenylhydrazine, otherwise known as 'Brady's Re- Agent' was discovered at the St Aloysius Secondary School, Main Street, Carrigtwohill.

Following a Garda request, the team arrived at 4.30pm and removed the chemical from the school laboratory to a nearby greenfield location, where it was made safe through the use of a controlled explosion.

The school was empty at the time as classes had finished for the day.

The scene was declared safe at 5.10pm and the team returned to base.

Dinitrophenylhydrazine/ 'Brady's Re-Agent' is a re-agent routinely used in laboratories around the country that can become unstable over time.
