The gunman, who was dressed in dark clothes, fled the scene, on a motorbike driven by a second man in the direction of Dublin city centre.
The victim, who is believed to be a convicted criminal and recently released from jail, died at the scene.
It is understood he was serving a sentence for drugs offences and a consecutive jail term for assault.
