Science Foundation Ireland to announce €300m investment

A €300m investment in science is being announced for Ireland this morning.

It comes under the Science Foundation Ireland Research programme and aims to deliver research which supports the economy and will help to boost foreign direct investment.

Mark Ferguson from the SFI explains where some of the money will go.

He said: "Marine renewable energy, obviously Ireland is one of the best places in the world for tidal and wave energy.

"So obviously when the waves crash in from the sea, we will be able to harness that technology. Then there is nanotechnology, material science, important for ICT, for medical devices.

"Food for health, it's really about the bugs that are in your gut and how they produce things that are really important for your health."
