1,500 people sought consular assistance last year

Nearly 1,500 people sought consular assistance while abroad in 2012.

New figures released today by the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore show an increase in the levels of assistance recorded in recent years.

The Tánaiste congratulated the support provided by the staff of Irish Embassies and Consulates, as well as the Consular Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Mr Gilmore also expressed his personal condolences to those families that suffered bereavements of loved ones abroad.

He also urged travellers to obtain medical and travel insurance to avoid the burden placed on families in the unfortunate event of an accident or incident.
