A teenage couple were killed when their car collided with a tanker.

The victims, named locally as Kevin Conway and Lisa O’Donnell, died instantly in the collision in Co Tyrone.

It is believed Kevin was 17 and had only passed his driving test last week, while his girlfriend was 16.

Investigators have appealed for witnesses to the accident, which happened on the Termon Road near Pomeroy, Co Tyrone, yesterday afternoon.

Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer and councillors Cathal Mallaghan and Ann Marie Fitzgerald sympathised with the families of the teens.

Mr Mallaghan said: “Up until Saturday afternoon, these young people had their whole lives ahead of them and no doubt were looking towards the future but this terrible accident has brought their lives to a tragic end.

“It is a sharp reminder of the fragility of human life and my thoughts are with their grieving family at this difficult time.”

Ms Fitzgerald said the horrific accident had brought devastation to two families.

“Nothing could be more painful than the loss of a child and on behalf of the whole community, I want to express deepest sympathy and condolences,” she said.

The teenagers come from two well-known families in the area.

Kevin’s parents, Francis and Pauline Conway, live in Carrickmore while Lisa’s parents, Sean and Brigid, are from Loughmacrory.

The PSNI said a man in his 30s injured in the crash was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is not serious.

Mr McAleer, who also visited both family homes, said the tragedy left the community in shock.

“The young victims were immensely popular and had a huge circle of friends,” he said. “There is going to be very difficult days, weeks and months ahead for the families as they try to come to terms with this immense loss.

“It is important to know that the wider community are thinking about them and will be there to support them in the difficult days ahead.”

Elsewhere, an 18-year-old pedestrian who died after being hit by a car on the Monaghan Road, Armagh, on Friday was named as Andrew Higgins.

And a father and daughter who died in a road accident on Thursday night were named as Colin Doherty and Hannah Doherty, 15.

The pair were in a car which was in a collision with a cattle lorry between Magherafelt and Moneymore.
