Martin: International headlines on Savita wide of the mark

The Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin says he feels the country has been wrongly portrayed internationally over the abortion issue.

The Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin says he feels the country has been wrongly portrayed internationally over the abortion issue.

Dr Martin says he agrees with the Taoiseach that the debate on abortion cannot be rushed.

Commenting on the death of Savita Halappanavar, he says that current guidance given to the medical profession should be reviewed if it is insufficient.

But the Archbishop feels that certain global headlines were very wide of the mark.

“I think in some cases there has been an exaggeration. Even in some of the talk here in Ireland, to say it is a dangerous place to be pregnant doesn’t help.

“Abortion is a divisive issue.”
