Cork mother charged with murdering young son

A Co Cork mother charged with murdering her eight-year-old son has been sent forward for trial today.

Diane Ward (aged 42) of Harrison Place, Charleville, is accused of murdering her son Anthony, at their home on September 3 last.

The boy was found dead in a bedroom at his house.

Superintendent Pat McCarthy of Mallow garda station served the book of evidence this morning at Limerick District Court.

Ms Ward, who appeared before the court via video link wearing a black and white overcoat, confirmed her name and that she could hear proceedings.

Judge Eugene O'Kelly gave Ms Ward the 'Alibi Warning', explaining to her that she had 14 days to give the State, the contact details of any defence witnesses she may rely on at her forthcoming trial.

Ms Ward, who replied "OK", also thanked the judge after he granted an application by her solicitor for a junior and senior counsel to represent her at her trial.

She was remanded in continuing custody to appear for trial at the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
