Woman who requested termination dies in Galway hospital

The death of a pregnant woman in Galway is being blamed on the government's failure to legislate for abortion.

31-year-old Savita Praveen died at University College Hospital in Galway on the 28th October last, after she was denied a life-saving termination.

She had been admitted to hospital a week earlier suffering from a miscarriage, and was told by doctors that the foetus had no chance of survival.

However medics had detected a heartbeat and refused to remove the foetus for three days, leaving Savita vulnerable to an infection which proved fatal.

A candlelit vigil will be held for Savita Praveen in Galway this coming Saturday.
