Children's Hospital 'could be delayed if Mater not chosen'

The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) has said a project delay of two and a half years can be expected should an alternative site to the Mater be chosen for the Children's Hospital.

In a previously unpublished memo, the NPHDB, which was appointed by the Government, said the Coalition cannot disregard the €70m already spent on the Mater site and risk a delay in opening the facility if another site gets the green light.

Last year, Health Minister James Reilly invited leading international paediatricians to Ireland and all recommended the Mater site for the new Children's hospital, due to its ability to deliver a tri-location facility.

The Government is expected to announce the location of the new National Children's Hospital in the coming week.
