The government is being urged to haul in the banks and insist they stop interest rate hikes after AIB announced a half a percent rate hike for variable mortgage customers - the second rise in three months.

Fianna Fáil's Michael McGrath says the government has to act after failing to make the banks adhere to promises so far.
