FG's Doherty: We don't have two tier children, so why means test benefit?

An advisory group has recommended that the benefit be cut to €100 per child per month.

And yesterday, the Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney said he believes the government has to consider if it is fair for high income families to get the same benefit as low income earners.

But Deputy Regina Doherty says there should be no two tier child benefit system in Ireland: "The simple answer is no. We don't have two tier children in this country, we have children.

"If this is a universal payment and in the spirit it is given to children, it should be equal and the same for everybody.

"If it is being paid to wealthy families who do not need it to pay for groceries, ESB bills and mortgages, then let's just tax it."
