Fitzgerald: No decision made on €100 Child Benefit reduction

The Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald has said no decisions have been made on whether or not to cut child benefit in December's Budget.

It has been reported that an advisory group recommended that the benefit should be reduced by as much as €100 per month per child.

Minister Fitzgerald said the report has not been considered by Cabinet and it is "simply a recommendation" at this stage.

Ms Fitzgerald said: "The particular report referred to hasn't been before Cabinet yet, no decisions have been taken.

"We obviously have a very difficult budgetary situation, but absolutely no decisions have been taken, such as have been reported.

"My own view is that Child Benefit is critical for families, it protects against child poverty, it helps with childcare costs, many families are struggling.

"My view is that it is extremely important for families."
