Irish Cancer Society supports app to help kids kick smoking

More than 12% of children aged between 10 and 18 say they are "current smokers".

Now, in an effort to get kids to kick the habit, the Irish Cancer Society has joined forces with a European Commission campaign to set up a free smartphone app.

The iCoach App is free to download for both Android and iPhone handsets.

Senior health promotion manager with the Irish Cancer Society Joanne Vance said the app was tailor-made to suit the smoker.

"It will ask you a series of questions like an online questionnaire to build up a picture of you as a smoker (and) does a series of tests based on that informaton," she explained.

"It will give you a programe then based on your particular needs."
