Prison attacks up 7% last year

The number of attacks by prisoners on fellow inmates jumped by 7% last year.

Prison service figures say 1,014 were recorded in 2010, but that increased to 1,115 in 2011.

According to the Irish Examiner, the highest number of incidents was recorded at Saint Patrick's Institution for young offenders in Dublin.

A total of 367 assaults were reported there last year.
