Hogan: Property tax details a matter for Finance Minister

The Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has said no decision will be made on a property tax before the Budget.

Mr Hogan made the comments amid reports that a bailout review by the Troika, out later today, will urge for faster progress on the new tax.

It was reported at the weekend that the Taoiseach Enda Kenny had told the Cabinet that he wants the details of the new tax announced well in advance of December.

He was also reported to have said that the charge could be as much as €400 per house.

Minister Hogan has refused to be drawn on the amount to be paid and on whether or not the tax will be based on the value of the house or the site.

He said all will be revealed on Budget day.

Mr Hogan said: "The administrative arrangements take a bit of time as you know from the experience of the Household Charge, it needs a good lead-in time.

"That is happening at the moment between the Revenue and the Department of the Environment. The details about the level of the property tax and how it will be charged will be a matter for the Minister for Finance in the Budget."
