Abbeyshrule in Co Longford has been crowned the Tidiest Town in Ireland for 2012.

Abbeyshrule in Co Longford has been crowned the Tidiest Town in Ireland for 2012.

Residents beat off competition from a record 855 other towns around the country to take the much-coveted prize.

It was a double win for Abbeyshrule, having also claimed the prize for Tidiest Village.

Clonakilty in Co Cork was awarded the Tidiest Small Town, Westport in Co Mayo received the Tidiest Large Town award, whilst Ennis in Co Clare was named Tidiest Large Urban Centre.
