Almost half of parents have no money in place to fund their child’s higher education and a third are worried they won't be able to afford third level education for their child.

That's according to a new survey from financial institution, Standard Life.

The research shows 75% of parents believe full university fees will be introduced but many feel they didn't act soon enough to put a college fund in place.

A total of 49% regret not starting a regular savings policy when their child was born.

The average cost of sending a young person to college for four years if they live away from home is about €40,000.
