An independent senator says a system should be put in place which "rigorously analyses" a family's income, when assessing whether a student would qualify for a college grant.

John Crown's comments come as reports today suggest that farmers and the self employed may not only have to declare all of their assets when being means-tested for a third level grant but they may also be required to show their earnings for the previous three years.
