Dundon charged with murder of Geoghegan

A 29-year old Limerick man has appeared before the Special Criminal Court charged with the murder of rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

John Dundon of Hyde Road, Ballinacurra Weston has been remanded in custody for six weeks.

The 28-year old rugby player was shot dead near his home in Limerick on November 9, 2008, in a case of mistaken identity.

Last February 26-year old Barry Doyle from Portland Row, Dublin was sentenced to life for the murder of Shane Geoghegan who was shot five times.

The garda investigation continued and today Dundon appeared at the Special Criminal Court – accused of the murder.

The court heard he made no neply to the charge.

Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt he spoke briefly at today's hearing.

When asked by the registrar if he was John Dundon he stood up and replied 'I am yeah'.

Under statute the DPP directed he be brought before the Special Criminal Court rather than a District Court because it's her opinion the ordinary courts are "inadequate to secure the effective administration of justice'.

He's been remanded in custody to appear again on October 2 when the book of evidence is expected to be served.
