Report highlights risk of emigration
A new report into Irish emigrants to the UK shows that many are at risk of destitution.
The Crosscare Migrant Project has said people leaving for Britain are putting themselves at risk by travelling without family connections or pre-arranged employment.
The report also shows that many migrants were having to leave their families behind to try to pay for mortgages at home in Ireland.
Policy Officer with Crosscare Migrant Project, Joe O'Brien, said migrants should make sure they know what they are entitled to before leaving for the UK.
Mr O'Brien said: "We do advise people to do their research in terms of what they need to bring with them if things go wrong and in particluar we are talking about things like social welfare.
"We have had some cases whereby people went over, looked for work and were continually eating into their savings after not finding work, and then ended up in a situation of destitution."
