Ex-GAA chief praises Cavan support for Quinns

Former GAA President Sean Kelly has praised the thousands of people who turned out in support of the Quinn family in Co. Cavan last night.

Fr Brian D'Arcy and well known GAA figures, including Mickey Harte and Colm O'Rourke, made speeches supporting the family.

Earlier this month, Sean Quinn Junior and his cousin Peter Darragh Quinn were sentenced to three months in jail for contempt of court.

However, only Sean Junior is serving his sentence, as Peter Darragh Quinn went on the run.

MEP Sean Kelly has said that the moral aspect of supporting the Quinns is completely separate to the multi-million euro court case the members of Ireland's once richest family now face.

Mr Kelly said: "In some respects it is admirable that people would say 'we feel strongly about an issue here', that is what freedom of expression is about.

"Obviously there are different views at local level about what is happening, they probably feel strongly about Anglo Irish Bank and so forth, so in that regard I can understand why they are doing it."
