New Mauritian police team to re-investigate McAreavey murder

A new police team in Mauritius is being appointed to re-investigate the murder of Michaela McAreavey on the island last January.

A statement from the Tanaiste's office this evening, has said that there is to be a judicial enquiry on the island to examine the case to determine what further actions can be taken to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Irish Ambassador to Mauritius, Brendan Mc Mahon, met with Prime Minister Ramgoolam of Mauritius and his Foreign Minister Arvin Boolell in the capital Port Louis today.

In the meeting, Ambassador McMahon expressed the concern felt in Ireland at the leaking and publication of photographs of Michaela McAreavey's body in a newspaper there.

Prime Minister Ramgoolam confirmed the investigation into Mrs McAreavey's death has reopened and that a new police team is to be appointed to the case.

Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore said this evening, the Government is happy to consider any approach from the Mauritian authorities for assistance from the Gardai in the ongoing enquiry, and is also ready to liaise with the authorities in Northern Ireland.

He also confirmed that his Department remains in close contact with the Harte and McAreavey families and continues to offer them every consular support and advice.
