Taoiseach optimistic for 'early resolution' to debt negotiations

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has today said that he is hopeful that a deal on Ireland's banking debt will be agreed soon.

Talks are underway between the Troika and Government and other EU governments on taking banking debt off the sovereign.

Deputy Kenny told the Seanad today that this deal would make a real difference for Ireland's economic recovery.

"I remain hopeful, actually, for an early resolution, delivering a significant boost to our chances of recovery," he said.

"While for obvious reasons I cannot go into detail on what will be a very detailed and sensitive negotiation, let me assure the Seanad here that the Government will be working to ensure the very best possible deal for Ireland, and therefor for Irish people and taxpayers."
