50 troops to be moved from Athlone barracks

The Government has confirmed its intention to downgrade Custume Barracks in Athlone.

Around 50 troops are to be moved from the barracks as a new two-brigade structure is put in place in Cork and Dublin.

Junior defence minister Paul Kehoe said around 1,000 personnel would remain in Athlone.
