New student grant system launched

A new online system for third level students applying for grants is aiming to save the exchequer €5m a year.

For the first time, Leaving Cert students entering third level this year will not have to wait for the offer of a college place before making a grant application.

The new system, which goes live today, will centralise grant applications, which were previously processed by more than 60 separate authorities.

The system, known as SUSI, aims to help students submit their applications and speed up the process so that they have access to funds when the college year starts.
