Mayo man charged with murder of father

A man has been charged with the murder of his father in Co Mayo over the weekend.

Tom Biggins, 71, died after being shot at his family farm at Ballynalty on Sunday.

His 33-year-old son John Biggins was formally charged with his murder at Ballina District Court today and remanded in custody.

The only application from John Biggins' legal team was that he receive the appropriate medical treatment deemed necessary when in prison.

The court was told the accused had been under constant medical care for the last number of years, both as an in-patient and out-patient.

Judge Denis McLaughlin granted this request.
