British teen struck by lightning - twice

A British teenager has been struck by lightning twice in one afternoon.

Matt Wilks was in his garden wearing an "umbrella hat" when the lightning bolts him, and he now credits the unusual headwear for saving his life.

He is quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: "It felt weird …like being hit on the head really hard. There was this bright flash as a fork of lightning splintered above us, and that’s when I felt it hit.

"Just before that a bolt leapt from the metal garden gate and hit me.”

But luckily for the 19-year-old from Ryde on the Isle of Wight, medics confirmed he was fine after being admitted to hospital.
