A Labour Party Junior Minister has today said the Government has made a "reasonably good start" in restoring Ireland's reputation globally.

The party is preparing for its first party conference since taking office.

Security is tight for the event at NUI Galway, as a number of protests are planned.

Joe Costello said that a lot of work has been done in stabilising the economy.

"I think that we've made a reasonably good start in restoring Ireland's reputation, in creating stability globally, in creating recognition by the global community that we are seriously getting our finances back in order," he said.

"Obviously we would love to see a situation whereby there's more jobs created."
