Secondary school teachers are warning that the student drop-out rate could rise next year as a result of changes to guidance counselling services.

The Teacher's Union of Ireland (TUI) said that from September, schools will have to provide the services from within the school's regular teaching allocation, instead of being an additional allowance.

It is warning that principals will face difficult decisions as a result and that student disaffection could increase.
